About Thermography
Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI), commonly known as thermography, is a non-invasive imaging service that captures thermal patterns from the surface of the body.
Unlike imaging technologies that primarily evaluate anatomical structure, thermography provides information about physiological patterns and temperature variations. A typical thermography session takes approximately 30–60 minutes and does not require radiation, compression, needles, or physical contact with the body.
Thermal imaging may be used to evaluate areas of concern throughout the body, including areas associated with pain or injury, and can provide information that may be useful for monitoring changes over time.
All thermal images are securely submitted for interpretation by qualified medical professionals trained in digital thermal imaging.
Thermography for Women & Men
Thermography can be performed on various areas of the body and may be used as a complementary tool alongside your existing healthcare.
Thermal imaging can provide your healthcare provider with additional information about physiological patterns that may warrant further evaluation or monitoring. It does not provide a diagnosis on its own and should be considered alongside your medical history, physical examination, and other appropriate diagnostic testing.
Benefits of Thermography
Non-Invasive
Thermography is a non-invasive imaging procedure. There are no needles, injections, or procedures that require contact with the body.
No Radiation
Thermal imaging uses infrared technology to capture heat patterns and does not expose you to ionizing radiation.
No Compression
Breast thermography does not require the compression used during mammography, making the procedure a comfortable option for many individuals.
Comfortable & Convenient
A typical thermography appointment takes approximately 30–60 minutes and is designed to be a comfortable, non-invasive experience.
Provides Physiological Information
Thermography captures thermal patterns that may provide additional information about physiological changes occurring at the body’s surface.
Monitoring Over Time
Thermography can be particularly useful when images are compared over time. Establishing a personal baseline allows future images to be evaluated for changes in thermal patterns.
Complementary to Conventional Care
Thermography is not intended to replace conventional diagnostic testing. Instead, it can provide additional information that you and your healthcare provider may consider when evaluating your health or monitoring an existing concern.
Breast Thermography
A Non-Invasive Breast Imaging Service
Breast thermography is a radiation-free, non-contact imaging procedure that captures thermal patterns of the breasts and surrounding tissue.
Unlike mammography, breast thermography does not require compression or exposure to X-rays. Because thermography evaluates physiological patterns while mammography evaluates breast structure, the two procedures provide different types of information.
Thermography does not replace mammography or other breast cancer screening recommended by your healthcare provider.
Establishing Your Personal Baseline
One of the most valuable aspects of thermal imaging is the ability to compare images over time.
An initial breast thermography study provides a snapshot of your individual thermal patterns. A follow-up study approximately three months later may be recommended to establish a stable baseline. Once a baseline has been established, future studies can be compared against it to monitor changes over time.
Annual monitoring may then be recommended based on your individual circumstances and healthcare provider’s guidance.

What to Expect
1. Preparation
You will receive instructions before your appointment to help ensure that your body is in an appropriate state for thermal imaging.
2. Thermal Imaging
A Certified Clinical Thermographer captures a series of thermal images using a specialized infrared camera. The process is non-invasive, contact-free, and does not use radiation.
3. Medical Interpretation
Your images are securely transmitted for interpretation by physicians trained in digital thermal imaging.
4. Your Report
A written report is prepared and can be shared with the healthcare provider of your choice. Reports are normally available within 7–10 business days.
Thermography & Mammography
Thermography and mammography are different types of imaging and provide different information.
Thermography evaluates physiological and thermal patterns, while mammography evaluates breast tissue structure using X-ray imaging.
They should not be viewed as competing tests or substitutes for one another. Thermography is a complementary service and should not replace mammography or other screening recommended by your healthcare provider.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is thermography safe?
Thermography is a non-invasive imaging procedure that uses infrared technology. It does not use ionizing radiation, breast compression, or physical contact with the body.
Is thermography FDA cleared?
The FDA has cleared certain thermal imaging devices for specific uses. FDA clearance applies to the device and its authorized use; it does not mean thermography replaces established diagnostic procedures or recommended cancer screening.
Who takes the images?
Images are captured by a Certified Clinical Thermographer trained in clinical thermal imaging protocols.
Who reads the images?
Images are securely submitted to qualified physicians specifically trained in interpreting digital thermal images. Additional review may be requested when appropriate.
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No. You may schedule a thermography study without a doctor’s referral. With your permission, a copy of your report can also be provided to the healthcare provider of your choice.
Is thermography a replacement for a mammogram?
No. Thermography and mammography evaluate different aspects of breast health. Thermography should not replace mammography or other breast screening recommended by your healthcare provider.
Why may I need a second breast study after three months?
A second study can help establish your individual baseline. Comparing two studies over time allows thermal patterns to be evaluated for stability and provides a reference point for future examinations.
What happens if my thermography results are abnormal?
Thermography is not a diagnostic test for cancer or other specific diseases. An abnormal or unusual thermal pattern should be discussed with your healthcare provider, who can determine whether additional examination or diagnostic testing is appropriate.
How quickly will I receive my report?
Reports are normally available within 7–10 business days. Expedited reporting may be available upon request.
What is cold stressing?
Cold stressing is a specialized thermographic procedure used to evaluate certain aspects of vascular and sympathetic nervous system function. It is not routinely required for every breast thermography study but may be requested for specific clinical circumstances.
Does insurance cover thermography?
Insurance coverage varies. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to determine whether your plan provides reimbursement. HSA, MSA, and Flexible Spending Account eligibility may vary by plan, so check with your plan administrator.
A Complementary Look at Your Health
Thermography provides a non-invasive way to observe thermal patterns and changes over time. When used appropriately alongside your medical history, physical examination, and conventional diagnostic testing, it can provide additional information for you and your healthcare provider.
