We have been discussing the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Tapping protocol to help us deal with difficult thoughts and emotions. Tapping also helps us develop emotional intelligence, or an awareness of how we feel. Many of us struggle to articulate our feelings and express them to others. This means that we do not have a strong relationship with ourselves. When we develop a strong bond with someone else, we spend time with them and get to know them on a deeply personal level. This is what we must do with our bodies, because our bodies are always trying to communicate with us. When we listen close enough, we find that the body is reflecting to us our deeper thoughts and beliefs.
Connecting the Dots
By observing what the body is doing, we can connect this to a thought to understand why the body is acting in this way. Here are a few examples:
Thyroid
The thyroid is in the throat which allows people to speak outwardly what they think and feel on the inside. The root purpose is for survival and getting one’s needs met. If your thyroid is under-active, then ask yourself whether you can identify with any of the following thoughts:
“It’s better to not speak.”
“I better stay quiet.”
“My opinion doesn’t matter.”
“I don’t get a say in the matter.”
“When I speak up, it causes a problem.”
Many people with symptoms of low thyroid have lived or currently live in an environment where they are not able to freely express themselves, and have associated safety or survival with not using this important function. This is where tapping can help us correct this wrong belief and identify its origin.
Uterus
The uterus is where new life is created. This needs to be a loving, supportive environment in order for the new life to grow and develop properly. If there is shame, the lowest of all the frequencies, then this creates a toxic environment. The lining of the uterus will even attempt to grow outside the uterus to leave the toxic environment because child bearing is critical to the survival of the species. Thoughts related to matters concerning the uterus might include:
“I should be ashamed of myself.”
“I am not good enough.”
“I don’t value myself.”
“I don’t allow myself to feel.”
Many of us were shamed as children when we showed emotion, or when we acted in the ways that were authentic to us rather than how we should act. This wired us to turn against our true emotions and become someone we are not, someone “better,” someone we should be. Tapping on this can help us become more aware of shame that may be hiding within us.
Bones
The bones hold the body upright, they are the body’s foundation. The bones reflect the thoughts and beliefs at our core, the ones that don’t often change or “budge”. When we get too stuck in our ways and don’t allow ourselves to be flexible and adapt to life’s changes, we may become stiff and develop pain in our joints. Some thoughts and beliefs to examine include:
“Everything’s going to go bad.”
“Things are never gonna change.”
“This is just the way it is.”
“I know that’s what she’s thinking.”
Many of these are “thinking traps” identified in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and include catastrophizing, over-generalizing, mind-reading, and blame-shifting. These thoughts are problematic at your core because they will determine what kind of path you take based on your perception of reality.
Pancreas
The pancreas secretes fluids to aid digestion. We put food in our mouth in order to keep us alive by giving our body the fuel it needs. Energetically speaking, the pancreas helps us “digest” incoming energy. This relates to power, because we have the choice of what we eat and put into our bodies. However, if we have weak energetic boundaries due to a lack of self empowerment, then the pancreas is forced to digest that which is not healthy for it, and that which it doesn’t want. When we continue to accept toxic thoughts, beliefs, or emotions, we are likely operating out of a victim mentality where there is a perception of a lack of power to do anything about it. Tapping around this helps us identify how we may be giving our power away by maintaining the victim mentality.
“There’s nothing I can do about it.”
“This always happens.”
“People are always going to disappoint me.”
“I can’t believe they would do this to me.”
Every function of the body has a part in survival and safety, therefore, if you are not using these functions properly, your body is going to alert you to this to get you on the correct path.
Tapping Exercise
Re-frame all of the negative statements you identify with into positive statements. For example, you could re-phrase, “Things are never going to change” to “I have the power to create change.” Use the tapping protocol and tap along the 9 acupressure points while saying these positive statements.
