Your Body Has a Story to Tell: Discovering Thermography

Our bodies are constantly communicating with us.

Sometimes the messages are obvious—a sore muscle after a workout, tiredness after a busy week, or the warmth we feel when our circulation increases.

Other times, the changes happening within us may be much more subtle.

What if there were a way to see some of those subtle patterns?

That is what makes thermography so fascinating.

We are excited to introduce Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI), commonly known as thermography, as a new service at our wellness center in partnership with Picture My Health, LLC, a Minnesota-based company specializing in clinical thermal imaging.

For those who are curious about their bodies and interested in taking a more proactive, whole-person approach to wellness, thermography offers a fascinating new perspective.

Seeing What We Normally Can’t See

Every human body naturally gives off infrared energy.

We can’t see it with our eyes, but a specialized infrared camera can detect it.

Thermography captures this infrared energy and translates it into a visual image of thermal patterns across the body’s surface.

The result is something you can actually see—a colorful thermal map showing areas of relative temperature difference.

It’s a little like turning an invisible part of your body’s story into something visible.

And that is what makes a thermogram so interesting.

A Technology With Roots Going Back More Than 200 Years

The science behind thermography has a surprisingly long history.

In 1800, British astronomer Sir William Herschel was experimenting with sunlight when he made an important discovery.

He placed thermometers across the different colors of the visible light spectrum and noticed something unexpected: the temperature continued to rise beyond the red light that our eyes could see.

He had discovered infrared radiation.

That discovery eventually opened the door to technologies that could detect heat that is invisible to the human eye.

Over the next two centuries, scientists continued developing ways to measure and visualize infrared energy. As cameras became more sophisticated, infrared imaging began finding applications in research, industry, and eventually healthcare.

Today, digital infrared cameras can capture incredibly detailed thermal patterns.

Something that was once completely invisible can now be observed.

So, What Exactly Is Thermography?

Thermography is a non-invasive imaging process that captures thermal patterns from the surface of the body.

Unlike imaging technologies that primarily show anatomy and structure, thermography provides information about surface temperature patterns and physiological activity.

And the experience itself is wonderfully simple.

There is:

  • No radiation

  • No needles

  • No injections

  • No breast compression

  • No physical contact

A typical appointment takes approximately 30–60 minutes.

You simply relax while a trained thermographer captures a series of thermal images.

Those images are then securely submitted for professional interpretation, and a written report is prepared for you.

Why Are Thermal Patterns Interesting?

Think about how often we measure our health.

We check our temperature.

We measure blood pressure.

We look at bloodwork.

We track our heart rate.

We pay attention to our sleep, energy, movement, nutrition, and stress.

All of these things give us different pieces of information.

Thermography offers another piece.

It allows us to observe thermal patterns.

These patterns may vary from one person to another, and they can also change over time.

That’s where thermography becomes especially interesting from a wellness perspective.

Rather than simply taking one picture and forgetting about it, thermal images can be compared over time.

Your Body Is Unique—So Your Baseline Should Be, Too

One of the concepts we love about thermography is the idea of a personal baseline.

There is no one-size-fits-all picture of what a person’s thermal patterns should look like.

Your body is uniquely yours.

Your first thermography study creates a snapshot of your individual thermal patterns. A follow-up study may be recommended approximately three months later to help establish a stable baseline.

Once that baseline has been established, future studies can be compared with your previous images.

This gives you the opportunity to watch your own patterns over time.

It’s not about comparing yourself with someone else.

It’s about getting to know your own body.

Breast Thermography: A Different Kind of Breast Imaging

Breast thermography is one of the services that has generated a great deal of interest.

The experience is very different from mammography.

Thermography does not use X-rays and does not require breast compression or physical contact.

Instead, an infrared camera captures the natural thermal patterns of the breasts and surrounding tissue.

Because thermography and mammography provide different types of information, they can be viewed as complementary technologies.

Mammography looks primarily at breast structure using X-ray imaging.

Thermography looks at thermal and physiological patterns.

For women who are interested in being proactive about their breast health, thermography can offer another way to observe their individual patterns and create a personal baseline to compare over time.

As always, thermography can be part of a broader approach to breast health alongside the screening and care recommended by your healthcare provider.

Thermography Isn’t Just About the Breasts

Thermal imaging can be performed on many areas of the body.

Depending on the type of study, thermography may be used to observe areas associated with pain, injury, muscular discomfort, or other areas of interest.

This makes it a particularly versatile technology.

Rather than focusing on one specific part of the body, thermal imaging allows us to look at patterns and differences across the areas being studied.

For someone who is already paying attention to movement, recovery, stress, nutrition, sleep, and overall wellness, this can provide another interesting piece of information to consider.

A Different Way of Thinking About Wellness

There is something powerful about becoming more familiar with your own body.

Not because we should constantly be looking for something wrong.

But because awareness is part of wellness.

The more we understand our own patterns, the more informed conversations we can have about our health.

That might mean noticing how your body responds to activity.

It might mean establishing a baseline.

It might mean tracking changes over time.

Or it might simply mean satisfying your curiosity about those colorful images you’ve seen and wondering, “What does my body look like through a thermal camera?”

Sometimes wellness begins with a simple question.

Meet Picture My Health, LLC

To bring this technology to our community, we are partnering with Picture My Health, LLC, a Minnesota-based company located in the Minneapolis area.

We are excited to bring their experience to our wellness center and make this unique technology available to our community.

What Happens During Your Appointment?

If you’ve never experienced thermography, you may be wondering what the appointment is actually like.

The process is simple.

Before Your Appointment

You’ll receive a few preparation guidelines before your visit.

These recommendations help minimize outside factors that could influence your body’s surface temperature and help create consistent conditions for your images.

During Your Appointment

A Certified Clinical Thermographer will capture a series of thermal images using a specialized infrared camera.

The camera does not touch you.

There is no compression.

There is no radiation.

The process is quiet, comfortable, and completely non-invasive.

After Your Images Are Captured

Your images are securely submitted for interpretation by qualified professionals trained in digital thermal imaging.

A written report is then prepared for you.

Reports are normally available within approximately 7–10 business days.

You can keep your report for your own records and share it with your healthcare provider if you wish.

The Value of Looking at Changes Over Time

One picture gives you a snapshot.

Multiple pictures give you a story.

That’s one of the reasons we find thermography so interesting.

Our bodies are constantly adapting. We move, exercise, rest, experience stress, recover, age, and change.

Our thermal patterns can change, too.

Having the opportunity to establish a personal baseline and compare future images with that baseline gives you a way to observe your own patterns over time.

It’s another tool for becoming more aware of the incredible complexity of your body.

Wellness Is About the Whole Picture

We believe there is value in looking at health from many different perspectives.

Your symptoms matter.

Your history matters.

Your lifestyle matters.

Your nutrition matters.

Your sleep matters.

Your movement matters.

Your emotional well-being matters.

And the information gathered through appropriate health testing and imaging can provide additional pieces of the picture.

Thermography doesn’t have to be about replacing anything.

It can simply be about adding another perspective.

Another way to become curious.

Another way to learn.

Another way to pay attention.

We’re Excited to Bring Thermography to Our Community

Our wellness community is built around the idea that taking care of yourself is an ongoing journey.

There isn’t one perfect approach.

There isn’t one single measurement that tells the entire story.

Instead, wellness is about becoming more connected to your body, learning what makes you feel your best, and making informed choices along the way.

Thermography fits beautifully into that philosophy.

It is comfortable, non-invasive, radiation-free, and gives us a fascinating way to observe the body’s thermal patterns.

Most importantly, it invites us to slow down and become curious about something we often take for granted:

the incredible body we live in every day.

We are thrilled to welcome Picture My Health, LLC and thermography into our wellness center.

If you’ve been curious about thermography, this is your opportunity to learn more, experience the technology, and perhaps see your body from a completely new perspective.

Because sometimes, seeing is another way of listening.
